Running a 90-day sprint in Manitoba

Manitoba is one big city and a set of close-knit regional markets, under one of the longest heating seasons in southern Canada. Sprints follow both facts.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Manitoba's business market is unusually concentrated. Winnipeg holds most of the province's buyers, and the rest live in a handful of regional centres and farming communities that know their local businesses well. Add one of the longest heating seasons in southern Canada and a Manitoba sprint has two jobs: win the Winnipeg comparison, or own your home community.

The Manitoba market and its buyers

Winnipeg is both the capital and, by far, the largest market; the next tier is much smaller.

By 2021 Census population, Winnipeg is followed by Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Portage la Prairie and Thompson. In practical terms:

  • Winnipeg. Enough competition that buyers compare. Reply speed, clear quotes and visible reviews matter, and lead flow work should target the neighbourhoods and services you most want.
  • Southern regional centres. Brandon, Steinbach and Winkler are close-knit markets. A repeat and referral sprint often moves faster here than a paid-search test.
  • The North. Thompson serves a large area. Being reachable and dependable is most of the marketing.

Climate, seasons and sprint timing

Manitoba winters are long and very cold, and the heating season ranks among the longest in the southern part of the country.

For sprint timing:

  • Heating, plumbing and winter services should start in early summer, so that routines are in place well before the cold.
  • Spring and summer businesses, from landscaping to patios and exterior work, should run their sprint over the winter and be ready when the snow goes.
  • Retail should count back from the holiday period, with weeks 7 to 12 in October and November.

Cold snaps produce bursts of urgent calls. A sprint that tracks missed calls weekly shows whether the business can capture them.

Programs worth knowing, as of October 2026

For home-service businesses, Manitoba has several live energy programs that can support honest service-page content.

  • The Efficiency Manitoba Air Source Heat Pump Rebate offers $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate unit or $1,500 for ductless, in existing primary residences, with a $100 bonus for registered suppliers who submit an F280 heat-load calculation before 2027-03-31.
  • Manitoba was the first province to sign onto the federal Greener Homes Affordability Program, announced on 2025-09-12 in a Natural Resources Canada release, funding no-cost retrofits for low- to median-income households.
  • Manitoba applications to the federal oil-to-heat-pump grant are no longer accepted; the cut-off was 2026-07-31.

A quick Manitoba sprint check

Imagine a Winnipeg business that sends 45 quotes a month and wins 9, a 20% close rate. If a sprint adds two well-timed follow-ups and lifts that to 27%, it wins about 12, three more sales a month with no extra enquiries. At $1,100 per sale, that's $3,300 a month, or close to $10,000 over the three months after the change beds in.

Small-centre versus big-city scoreboards

A Brandon or Steinbach business may have only 20 enquiries a month, which makes weekly numbers jumpy. In that case we put a four-week rolling average beside every figure and judge the sprint on the trend rather than any single week.

How we would run a sprint in Manitoba

  1. Decide: Winnipeg or home community. Don't try to win both in one quarter.
  2. Time it to the cold. Have routines in place before the season, not during it.
  3. Track missed calls during any cold snap that falls inside the sprint.
  4. Lean on past customers in the smaller centres.

Frequently asked questions

Should a Manitoba sprint focus only on Winnipeg?

If most of your customers are there, yes, at least for the first sprint. Businesses based in Brandon, Steinbach or Winkler usually do better with a sprint built around their own community and its surrounding area.

When should a winter-peak business start?

Around early summer. With a long cold season, you want sprint changes routine before the first cold weeks, so weeks 7 to 12 land in late summer or early autumn.

Can we mention Efficiency Manitoba rebates?

Home-service businesses can mention them and link to Efficiency Manitoba. As of October 2026 the air source heat pump rebate is open, but confirm current terms on the official page before quoting any figure.
